Taipei Main Station and its surrounding is currently undergoing intensive renovation and redevelopment. I heard there will be a direct MRT lin to Taoyuan airport in 2012. So since is noisy and dusty, should you skip this place? When we went there in October 2009, most of the constructions are underground so is not that dusty or noisy when you are on the streets.
There are a lot of shops around this area on street level. Taipei is all about shopping! Shin Kong Mitsukoshi is just above the station. And there is also a very large and long famous underground shopping street (台北地下街)that stretches from Taipei Main Station MRT to Taipei Railway station and Taipei High Speed Rail station.
